The switched outlet wiring configurations show two different wiring scenarios which are most commonly used. The wiring and connections will depend on where the power enters the circuit. The connections for a switched outlet also known as a Half Hot Plug. The diagram shows the power entering into the circuit at the switch box location, then sending one power line for the outlet which is hot all the time and a switched leg for the top half of the outlet being used for a table lamp or a floor fixture.
These electrical wiring diagrams show typical connections. The diagram below shows the power entering the circuit at the grounded outlet box location, then sending power up to the switch and a switched leg back down to the outlet.
Notice that these outlets have the tab removed from the "hot" side or Brass side of the outlet which allows the top half of the plug to be controlled only from the switch while the bottom end of the outlet remains "hot" all the time. I have been reading online about 2 wire nm. I am curious though how you run wire to one fixture, hook it up, and then run the wire to the next fixture. Basically, you want to start with a switch. You run a black and white wire in from the bottom of the switch box from the panel. You connect the black wire to the switch. You connect the 2 white wires together, and then connect the other terminal on the switch to the black wire of the cable leaving this junction box towards the first light.
The ground wire should also be connected together in this manner, but to the ground terminal on the switch. Each light will have a cable "entering" from the switch and "exiting" away from the switch. At each light you'll connect the entering and exiting black wires together, as well as 1 terminal on the light. Do the same with the white wires. If there is a ground terminal on the light, do that as well, otherwise just connect the incoming and outgoing ground wires together.
At the last light, just connect the incoming black wire to 1 terminal on the light, and then connect the white wire to the other one. Switches Receptacles Lighting Outdoor.Electrical switches typically have volt power connected directly from the circuit panel. The switch will pass the electricity from the panel to a light or ceiling fan whenever the light switch is turned on, and break the power connection when the switch is turned off. If you need to provide power to an outlet or another switch, you can tap into either the live wire from the panel on the existing wall switch, or the switched wire, should you desire that the new element be controlled by the switch.
Pull off the switch cover plate by removing the two screws with a screwdriver. Turn the switch to the on position. Verify that the power is off to the switch by touching one leg of a circuit tester to the ground wire within the box, and the other to one of the two contact screws on the switch.
Unscrew the two screws that hold the switch in the box, and pull the switch and the wiring out of the box as far as the wiring will allow.
Insert a new section of electrical cable of the same gauge and configuration as the wiring already in the box through the hole in the back or side of the box. Pull out about 8 to 10 inches of wire.
Strip about 6 inches of outer sheathing from the cable with a utility knife. Loosen the wire nut connecting the two white wires. Twist the new white wire around the two existing white wires, and re-connect with the wire nut.
Cut an 8-inch single strand of black electrical wire from your supply. Twist one end of this wire around the exposed black wire in the box and connect with a wire nut. Remove the black wire coming from the breaker panel from it's contact on the switch. Then attach the exposed end of the short wire to the contact on the switch. Twist the three bare wires together, and make sure one of the three twisted bare wires is connected to the green grounding screw within the box.
Push the switch and the exposed wiring back into the box, and tighten the two screws to hold the switch into position. Replace the switch cover and the two cover screws. Turn on the electrical power at the breaker panel and test the switch and the power at the end of the tapped wire. These steps are for connecting to un-switched power from the panel. Should you desire to have the switch control the tapped wire, twist the two new black wires to the black wire connected to the electrical element the fan or light that the switch controlsrather than the black wire from the circuit panel.

Switch Outlet Wiring Diagrams
One of the conducting wires is black, and it's the hot one, meaning it carries the electricity on its outward path from the power source to the load. The other conductor is white. It's the return wire that completes the circuit from the load back to the power source. A switch interrupts the hot leg of the circuit, so it has terminals only for black wires and ground.
The terminals are brass. You connect the black wire from the power source to one of these brass terminals — the line terminal — and the black wire going to the light fixture to the other, which is the load terminal.
That leaves two white wires and two ground wires in the box. What do you do with those? The return path from the load bypasses the switch, so the white wires simply get spliced — or joined together. You do this by twisting the exposed ends together and screwing on a wire cap.
The ground wires also get twisted together, but they also have to be connected to the green ground screw on the switch. This is easy to do if you leave one wire longer so you can wrap it around the terminal. Daisy-chaining isn't the same as wiring lights in series. If you wire lights in series, they'll all go out when one of them fails. When you daisy-chain light fixtures, you're wiring them in parallel, and standard electrical color-coding makes this easy to do.
